Free Sensory Backpacks at Southcentre: Calmer, More Comfortable Visits

A busy shopping centre can be overwhelming for children and youth with sensory processing disabilities, who often can’t filter out external stimuli the way others do. To make visits calmer and more inclusive, Southcentre offers free Sensory Backpacks for families to borrow.

What’s inside: Each backpack is filled with tools for self-regulation, tactile input, attention focusing, and body-awareness support, items that help a child feel grounded when the environment becomes too much.

Who they’re for: Children and youth living with sensory processing disabilities. There is no age limit.

Cost: Free. There is no charge to borrow a Sensory Backpack.

Where to get one: Borrow from the Guest Services desk on the lower level, near Winners and LensCrafters, and return it there when you’re done. Guest Services also offers complimentary wheelchairs, walkers, and canes.

A community partnership: The program was created with the Calgary Wildrose Lions Club and Variety – the Children’s Charity of Alberta, which supports children living with disabilities and specialized needs.

The Sensory Backpacks are part of a broader accessibility commitment at Southcentre that also includes accessible parking across all lots, elevators throughout the centre, wheelchair-accessible washrooms on both levels, and companion and family washrooms. At Oxford Properties, we respect the dignity and independence of people with disabilities, and we’re committed to giving everyone equal access to our services.

The next time you’re planning a family trip, remember support is waiting at the door. Stop by Guest Services to borrow a Sensory Backpack and enjoy the day at a pace that works for your family.

For more, visit the Accessibility page or the Guest Services desk on the lower level.
