The purpose of this policy is to work collaboratively with Southcentre tenants to ensure our waste and recycling programs are sustainable, cost effective and adhered to by all tenants. This policy is effective as of January 2026.
Waste & Recycling Sorting Stations
Please take your waste and recyclable materials to the designated areas in the back corridors using the map(s) below. Follow directions of posted signage in order to properly separate the recyclable materials from other waste and to place them in the specified bins.

General Waste
After ensuring all recyclable or compostable materials are separated out, please dispose of general waste in the black bins found at the various designated waste areas.
Large Items
It is the responsibility of tenants to dispose of their own large waste items, such as furniture, shelving, display cases, or any large volumes of smaller items. Tenants may wish to use their own waste removal contractors.
Alternatively, for a reasonable fee, Southcentre may be able to assist tenants by disposing of these unwanted items for them. Please notify mall management via ‘Get in Touch’ on OxComm and we will provide direction on where to place the items. Fees will be reasonably determined based on the volume of items, in order to offset the cost we incur in the process.
If large items are left in the sorting areas without notifying mall management, fines will be issued, along with any additional cleaning fees. Please ensure that you contact mall management in order to avoid unnecessary fees.
Organics
Organic waste is to be disposed of separately from general waste by being placed in compostable bags and disposed of in the green bins marked for Organics. Organics cannot be placed into black waste bins due to weight restrictions. Please ensure all organic materials are separated from other materials and disposed of in the correct bins.
Recycling
Southcentre has programs in place with local vendors that will recycle a large variety of materials. These materials must be separated in the designated bins, including the following:
- Electronics
- Batteries
- Light bulbs
- Metal (must be free of any non-metal material)
- Beverage (deposit) containers
Cardboard is the most common recycled material but must be free from contaminants such as plastic wrapping and styrofoam. Please flatten all boxes when placing them in the appropriate areas and our maintenance team will take them to the compactors on site in order to process them.
Tenant Cleanup Station
There is now a tenant clean up station at the back entrance of the east corridor. This station includes a broom, shovels and other tools that are for tenants to use in order to clean up their own spills while using bins in this area. Please ensure the tools are returned in a clean and organized manner.
Cooking Oil – Restaurants Only
Used cooking oil must be pumped into the designated container for your restaurant.
When transporting the cooking oil from your restaurant to the designated containers, please ensure your staff is careful to avoid any spills. Keep storage containers sealed while transporting and ensure they are moved carefully.
If you have an oil spill, please notify security immediately and clean up the spill as directed. They can request the Maintenance team to provide a substance to place on top of the spill to properly clean the area.
Grease trap cleaning and removal of used cooking oil must be completed within the below timeframe:
- One hour after mall closure; and,
- 6:00 AM (must be cleared out by then)
Pallets
Tenants are not permitted to store pallets in common corridors. Please ensure your delivery drivers take back the pallets with them after they unload your merchandise during the delivery process.
Thank you for your continued support in ensuring Southcentre minimizes its environmental impact and keeps our common corridors free from debris.
