    We're BOMA Best

Changing the Future of built environments.

Southcentre Mall is the proud recipient of the BOMA Best Gold Certification in 2023. Achieving BOMA Gold certification means a building meets a comprehensive set of environmental and sustainability criteria across several categories, including energy, water, waste reduction, indoor environment, and environmental management.

These criteria are based on industry best practices, government regulations, and stakeholder expectations. Our property and operations team must engage in a rigorous certification process that involves assessments, audits, and ongoing reporting and verification.

The process is designed to ensure that the building meets the highest standards of sustainability and environmental performance and that it continues to maintain these standards over time.

    Sustainability at Southcentre

Southcentre Mall is committed to sustainability.

We’re proud of the following green initiatives:

    Recycling

Southcentre Mall is equipped with 4 compactors for recycling cardboard, paper, and plastics. We’re proud of our 90% waste diversion rate based on the 2024 waste audit conducted by an independent third-party local contractor.

On average, 14 metric tons of organics are diverted monthly in 2024, according to hauler tracking reports — turning leftovers into growth.

    Lighting

We’re illuminating Southcentre Mall more sustainably than ever. Our lights are not just bright; they’re smart.

We’ve upgraded 98% of our lighting to energy-efficient LEDs equipped with motion and daylight sensors, reducing electricity use for lighting by 10% compared to 2024.

    Bicycle Parking Stations

Bicycle stands are located at the following entrances: North Entrance near Scotiabank and South Entrance near Sport Chek.

    Bee Adoption

High above Southcentre, two bustling beehives house 50,000 honeybees each spring and summer. In partnership with Honey Meadow Farms, our rooftop beehives produced approximately 300 jars of honey in 2024-2025. The bees contribute to pollination of our rooftop garden and surrounding vegetation.

    Urban Garden

From spring to fall, Southcentre’s rooftop garden grows 150 planters of fresh vegetables, producing about 900 pounds of food each season. All of it is donated to Made by Momma, where volunteers use the produce in their commercial kitchen to prepare and deliver frozen meals, feeding 70 families in need every week across Calgary.
